There are different types of alternative medicine and different practices to help us release stress. Mikao Usui spent his life studying and demystifying the human state and crafting Reiki.

Reiki is a noninvasive complementary therapy that helps with stress, anxiety, and other medical issues studied and founded by Mikao Usui.

A Japanese Reiki master and the father of that spiritual practice, he was born on August 15, 1865. It's believed he received samurai-like training at a young age; according to his memorial stone, this is said to happen due to family heritage and links to the Hatamoto samurai. From childhood he practiced the martial arts techniques of Aiki.

His early years of discipline led him to travel and study under several different teachings like medicine, Buddhism, Christianity, psychology, and Taoism. His focus was never on claiming a true religion but on aiding his students in connecting with a universal life form, which guided his self-development into the mountains of Shugendō, a place where Shinto and Buddhist practices were commonly studied and regionally practiced, passed down through generations based on avoiding misfortune.

During the 1920s, Mikao Usui started to study and teach the concept of Reiki, which means "universal vital energy." It is cataloged with other oriental practices like acupuncture, hypnotherapy, aromatherapy, and meditation as pseudoscience or alternative medicine due to the lack of physical evidence of the energy or mind being treated. Reiki is a noninvasive session of an hour where a practitioner places their hand around focal points on the body as a complementary treatment for stress and muscle tension.

It is not a replacement for therapy, like breath work is not a replacement for medication, but it is an important tool that helps release pressure. It’s very important to not stop medication, therapy, or medical treatment from taking place in exchange for Reiki but to understand it as what Mikao Usui intended: a way to reconnect your body to you and the vital force within yourself. Aiding in a better sense of you and your body.
